Top floor penthouse in Mladost, Sofia is a rare combination of panoramic views of Vitosha mountain and loft spaces.
Owners are young couple, working mostly from home, who included a wide variety of functions in their design brief. In addition to the standard set of rooms, there is also a full-fledged office, fitness space and a separate video conference meeting space. With a series of functional transformations, we gave new meaning to many areas, removed unnecessary ones, merged and opened others. The fact that the apartment is on two floors, made the task more interesting and provided an opportunity for visual connections, not only on the floor plan but also vertically.
Upon entering the apartment, we find ourselves in front of a multifunctional bespoke piece of furniture, that passes through both levels. It serves as a coat rack, a library in the dining room, a storage cabinet, and an upholstered bench. The shelf has plenty of openings, which allows light to enter the internal corridors.
The spacious living room is divided into two zones. The area near the fireplace has a flexible design, that allows different functional scenarios, with the help of light mobile furniture. In one scenario, the room has more representative character with dining table for eight people. The pneumatic table retracts and the space is in a casual everyday configuration: with upholstered furniture for recreation.
The comfortable kitchen is complemented by three additional zones: a bar area covered with a stretched ceiling made out of lightweight fabric membrane; an upholstered alcove for sitting and privacy; dining area with table for casual daily meals and smaller gatherings. The design of the kitchen has a Scandinavian spirit – clean and bright lines with several colorful accents.

The second double-height area takes on the function of a modern home office and home gym. The loft space is handled by adding a recreation area with a hammock and upholstered carpet. You can enter it by climbing on a bespoke steel ladder, and the gym can be reached via stall bars. The mirror wall, oriented against the glazing, allows the view to literally enter the room. The three zones form an unusual space structured on three levels with an open visual connection between them.
Each of the three bedrooms has its own style and distinctive element. One room on the second floor was demolished and in the new wider open space we positioned a piece of bespoke four-sided furniture. Two of the sides are full-height mirrors and the opposite two are in natural wood covering.
